Celebrating National Manufacturing Week: October 7-11, 2024
October 7, 2024
During National Manufacturing Week, October 7-11, 2024, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority (VLCDA) highlights the importance of manufacturing in Lowndes County. This sector supports more than 4,600 jobs and is a key driver of the region's economic growth.
Lowndes County has experienced remarkable economic growth in the past four years, including the creation of 1,431 jobs and more than $996 million in capital investments from new and existing industries.
During 2020-2024, new industries were recruited, including GAF, Bimbo QSR, Arglass, Walmart's dairy processing facility, Prinsco, P&B Cold Storage, and Utility Plastics. In addition, 28 existing industries expanded their facilities, implemented machinery upgrades, or increased storage and production capacity to meet growth demand.
"Our existing manufacturing companies are also expanding and contributing significantly to the region's prosperity," said VLCDA Executive Director Andrea Schruijer. "Arglass, which opened in 2020, is adding a second furnace. The $230 million project will allow them to produce up to eight different types of glass containers simultaneously."
Schruijer emphasized that Valdosta's economic growth is not just about numbers; it also strengthens the community's skilled workforce, improves the quality of life, and reinforces the area's business-friendly environment.
"With our strong infrastructure, skilled workforce, and supportive community leadership, we are well-positioned for sustained economic success,” she said.
While honoring the manufacturing sector, Schruijer also highlighted the resilience and generosity demonstrated by businesses in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
"Despite their storm-related difficulties, our local industries stepped forward to provide vital support through product donations and volunteer efforts," she said. "As we continue to recover together, we are seeing the emergence of an even stronger and more unified community."
